Three Charities Nominated
Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington – Nominated by Trish McComb and Presented by Megan Harron, Director of Programs, and Trish McComb
Guelph Food Bank – Nominated by Colleen Kiriakos and Presented by Deborah Cripps, Board President
The Guelph Public Library Rosa Rattray Early Literacy Fund – Nominated by Wendy Fletcher and Presented by Euan Rattray and Kirsten Bester, Development Officer
Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington
There are several programs supported by Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington, including Keep Kids Fed and Adopt-a-Family. The focus of is this presentation was Adopt-a-Family, an initiative that seeks to create a magical holiday season for families despite financial struggles. The program provides gifts under the tree, but also supplies food gift cards. The organization supported 1772 families last year and expect 1800 this year.
The organization was seeking funds to augment their food gift card program. Gift card amounts have increased from $100 – $200. The donation would support 150 families and independent youths this year.
Guelph Food Bank
As food insecurity increases in the Guelph area, Guelph Food Bank (GFB) has been working to increase its infrastructure to expand service to the community. Currently there is a significant amount of food that is going to waste. To combat this, the GFB is raising funds to build a food processing plant. Currently 16 agencies receive excess goods from the GFB but food is still going to waste. The processing plant would not only help reduce waste, but provide more resources throughout the year to the community.
A private donor contributed $1 million dollars and is asking GFB to raise the same amount to match. The donation from 100WWCG would be used towards this fund or to purchase eggs and dairy, a resource that is always limited.
The Guelph Public Library Rosa Rattray Early Literacy Fund
The Rosa Rattray Early Literacy Fund was created to promote literacy in young children. Currently 1 in 3 children in kindergarten are vulnerable. If this is not addressed, the gap grows quickly. Resources to date include Early Learning stations, Born to Read packages provided to newborns, and educational toys. Many of these resources can be borrowed.
Donation funds would go towards providing additional resources as the program seeks to create equality of access and inclusivity. The goal is to ensure that all children can have what they need to learn, despite potential barriers.
